WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE?

I graduated from Texas Tech University in 2021 with a major in Human Sciences. I have worked at the Birch Bay Waterslides since 2018. I have a wide variety of past work experience such as a bartender and waitress, a fitness trainer and office assistant at an accounting firm. I recently started my own business consulting company where I have pursued different opportunities to help entrepreneurs start and monetize their vision and businesses.

WHAT MADE YOU GO INTO THIS FIELD?
My first official job was at the Birch Bay Waterslides as a Lifeguard in 2018. I then moved into the office where I fell in love with the park and operations. In 2021, I became the park manager. When I first applied for a lifeguard position, I never would have thought that in 2024, I would still be working here. However, the Birch Bay Waterslides is a very special place that has brought me so many experiences and skills as well as so much joy over the years.

WHAT ASPECT OF THE WATERPARK INDUSTRY DO YOU LIKE BEST?
We get the privilege of serving our guests and staff. When you look at it like that, there is nothing that beats it. It is truly a privilege to be able to provide our guests with a memorable and fun experience. It is also a privilege to have such a strong bond with team members and see their growth and joy over the season. It can be hectic and chaotic at times, but focusing on the guests and staff, realigning with the main goal and priority, makes it one of the best jobs.

WHO HAS MOST INSPIRED YOU IN YOUR CAREER?
There is a long list of people who have inspired me in my career and my life. A few inspirations that come to mind are my parents who taught and continue to teach me grit, discipline and hard work. Another one being my general manager, Iain Buchanan, who introduced me and welcomed me into the waterpark world, showing me all the possibilities and opportunities within it.
The guests that come to the park and the staff that I get the honor of leading, continue to inspire me to make it the best place, providing the best experience that I possibly can.
Attending the WWA Show in New Orleans this year, I met so many great people, learned so much about the industry and what possibilities are out there. Having these conversations, listening to the speakers inspired and expanded my vision for the waterpark industry. Specifically, Jessi O’Daniel inspired me from her teaching session in what the waterpark world has to offer and how to be a great leader.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR WATERPARK CAREER?
The greatest challenge that I have had in my waterpark career is learning to change my “I can do it myself ” perspective. I have always had the attitude of “if you want it done right, do it yourself ”. But through my years in a leadership position, I have learned, when you have the right people, in the right spots, trained and trusted, that is where all the magic happens.

HOW DO YOU KEEP FOCUSED AND MOTIVATED?
I stay focused and motivated by focusing on the guests. When we focus on how we can make our guests experience the best it can possibly be, that is all the motivation that I need.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN WORKING IN THE WATERPARK INDUSTRY?
If you are interested in the waterpark industry, then go for it! My advice for going into this industry is to always put your guests and your staff first. The reason that we all do this is to provide our guests with a fun and memorable experience. At our park, I also keep it a high priority to ensure positive job experience for my staff. I believe that it is an honor to be able to mentor them through their experience. As a leader, never put yourself above your employees. Lead by example and always be willing to do whatever it takes.
Never lose sight of your main visions and priorities. There is a lot that happens day to day and throughout a season, it can be easy to get distracted or confused about what to do. If you keep your priorities inline, you will always make the right decision and have the best outcome.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
My favorite part about my job is the connections and interactions we have. On guest side, we have the privilege of providing them with a day and summer of fun where they can make lasting memories. Seeing the smiles on everyone’s face and witnessing them having a great time is one of my favorite parts of this job. On the other hand, I love seeing my employees grow each season. Normally, we hire highschoolers and for many of them, it is their first job. I love mentoring them and supporting them throughout the summer for them to learn skills and enjoy themselves.

WHAT CAREER OR BUSINESS WOULD YOU CONSIDER IF YOU WERE STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN?
I honestly wouldn’t trade my position the past few years for anything. It has taught me so many lessons and skills that have shaped me into who I am today. It has not always been easy and smooth sailing, but it is definitely worth it. Moving forward, I can see myself working in the waterpark industry while still also expanding and growing my own business consulting endeavors.

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH THE W WA?
I was introduced to the WWA by my general manager, Iain Buchanan. I am happy to be a part of this community where I learn so much and make great connections. •
