National Water Safety Month takes place annually each May and coincides with National Aquatic Week (sponsored by the National Recreation & Park Association). This national event helps support waterparks around the country in performing public-service acts that keep their guests-and the public as a whole-"water-aware."

To help WWA members take advantage of the positive opportunities presented by this community-service event, the World Waterpark Association offers a detailed public-relations "How-to" Kit. Available in electronic format, this kit provides tips on generating publicity surrounding National Water Safety Month, ways in which park members can communicate with the media and creative public relations suggestions members can use to promote their efforts.

Specifically, the National Water Safety Month Guide includes:

  • Tips on communicating with the media
  • Hints on creative public relations
  • Steps on how to write a press release
  • Actual press releases members can send to the local media
  • Ideas on developing a media list
  • Advice on distributing a press release
  • Details on when to distribute a press release
  • Print-ready Public Service Announcements (PSAs) members can send to the local media with related pitch letters
  • Radio PSA scripts you can send to local radio stations
  • Suggestions on developing informational fliers
  • Water-safety tips flier you can distribute to local churches, synagogues, schools and community centers
  • A new water safety logo to put on your park's website that directs members to safety information on Waterparks.com.
  • A new Pool & Water Safety Activity Book (Available for purchase. See information below.)

  • The first step in getting this important event recognized is to ask each state`s Governor to proclaim it as such. Below are some examples of Gubernatorial Proclamations that WWA has received for the 2008 event.

    Alabama Arizona Arkansas
    Colorado Connecticut Delaware
    Florida Georgia Illinois
    Iowa Kansas Kentucky
    Maine Maryland Michigan
    Minnesota Mississippi Missouri
    Montana Nebraska Nevada
New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico
    New York North Carolina Ohio
    Oregon South Carolina Tennessee
    Texas Utah Vermont
    Virginia Washington West Virginia
    Wisconsin Wyoming

WWA has created a customized Pool & Water Safety Activity Book for the use of its members. The book includes lots of fun activities like word searches, color by number, word games and more. Plus, it contains important safety messages that build water awareness in children and parents!
